Student protests: video shows mounted police charging London crowd

Video footage has emerged showing mounted police charging a crowd of protesters during this week's tuition fees demonstrations, the day after the Metropolitan police said tactics "did not involve charging the crowd".

Tens of thousands of school and college pupils and university students demonstrated in largely peaceful protests across the country against government plans to increase tuition fees and scrap the education maintenance allowance, but there were violent scenes at the central London protests. Hundreds of protesters were corralled or "kettled" by police, and later advanced upon by mounted officers.

Many who were in the crowd complained of being charged by police on horseback.

We are NOT all in this together.

This afternoon the Occupation was stormed by large numbers of police, who used a battering ram to demolish an inner wall of the library. The atmosphere remained defiant throughout as hastily constructed barricades were cast aside by the full force of Thames Valley Police. Occupiers were forcibly removed one by one and subjected to a full body search.

    This isn't just a student protest. It's a children's crusade

Outside Downing Street, in front of a line of riot police, I am sitting beside a makeshift campfire. It's cold, and the schoolchildren who have skipped classes gather around as a student with a three-string guitar strikes up the chords to Tracy Chapman's Talkin Bout a Revolution. The kids start to sing, sweet and off-key, an apocalyptic choir knotted around a small bright circle of warmth and energy. "Finally the tables are starting to turn," they sing, the sound of their voices drowning out the drone of helicopters and the screams from the edge of the kettle. "Finally the tables are starting to turn."

School students storm the gates to join the protests

At 11am today Year 11 students at the John Roan school who had congregated in the playground during their break, forced the gates open and stormed out of the school to join the national protest against attacks on education. At the same time sixth form students walked out to show their anger at the proposed £9,000 fee increases that will rob a generation of the right to a university education and the abolition of EMA.

The UCL Occupation sent the following to Michael Gove this afternoon:

    Dear Mr Gove,

You may be aware that as of 12.15pm on Wednesday 24th November, students have been occupying the Jeremy Bentham Room at University College London.

Since first entering the room, we have maintained a peaceful and respectful occupation. We have received widespread support from students, staff and unions including ...
